Taking the One Seat: A Meditation
Cultivating Peace Through Compassionate Awareness

BY LUME COLLECTIVE
In our fast-paced and unpredictable lives, finding a sense of inner peace and strength becomes essential for women's wellness, especially as we're often pulled in so many directions. A meditation practice that has proven to be profoundly transformative is "Taking the One Seat." By taking the one seat, we are creating the compassionate space to allow everything to arise and pass through our heart and mind—fear, grief, anxiety, loneliness, doubt, sorrow, shame, regret. By staying in your seat you will see it all come and go, leaving you with a profound sense of renewal and freedom rooted in wisdom and understanding.
Imagine your mind as the center of the universe, with emotions and mental states as visitors. Acknowledge their presence and allow them to express themselves fully. Observe the stories they tell, enticing you to follow them, but remember not to give up your seat. Stay in the room. Stay on the cushion. Stay rooted in compassionate awareness, witnessing these visitors without judgment. Eventually, the visitors will get tired and go home and maybe they’ll stop coming altogether. There will be nowhere to sit as you have stood strong in your awareness. This leads to incredible healing. As you bravely face your emotions and thoughts, they lose their power over you. With time, they may fade away or cease to bother you altogether. The practice of staying present and compassionate allows for inner transformation.
It's a common misconception that we shouldn't be affected by pain, grief, or fear. In truth, every one of us is affected by these emotions at some point in life. Taking the one seat teaches us that it's not about avoiding these emotions but rather how we approach and respond to them that determines our resilience and growth.
Through the meditation practice of Taking the One Seat, unshakable courage is born within our hearts. We learn to face life's challenges with compassion and grace, no longer avoiding discomfort but embracing it as part of the human experience. This newfound courage empowers us to navigate the ups and downs of life with strength and resilience.
Taking the one seat becomes a powerful tool for self-discovery and awakening. By observing our thoughts and emotions without attachment, we gain insight into the impermanent nature of all things. This understanding leads to a deeper connection with our true selves and the world around us.
Try it. Take the one set. Breathe. Let the visitors come. Let them go. With time and practice, you will cultivate unshakable courage and awaken to the beauty of life's ever-changing seasons. Rest in that assurance. Open your eyes. Move through your days with a centered and compassionate heart, knowing that all that arises will eventually pass away. compassionate heart, knowing that all that arises will eventually pass away.
In the midst of life's challenges and uncertainties, how might the practice of Taking the One Seat help you build resilience and find a deeper sense of peace and freedom within yourself?
